Lisa Ann Watkins
Lisa Ann Watkins uses PanPastel Colors in combination with colored pencils for her animal art portraits.
“I initially starting using PanPastel colors as a way of creating quick, and I mean very quick, tonal backgrounds to my portraits. I began to experiment by using them as what I refer to as a “softener” to my fur work. For example, if portraying soft fluffy fur like that of a poodle or a doodle, I would use the PanPastel over the top of my pencil work, as a glaze, and this would then soften and blend my pencil pigment to aid in capturing that perfect velvety look.
It was like a little miracle substance, and more and more often I found myself turning to them to help me out on a piece. Sometimes it was just to add a bit of extra “oomph” to my darks or to pop some “zing” into my mid-tones. And they were just so clean compared to traditional soft pastels that they slotted in beside my colored pencils like they were made for each other!” - Extracts from “Colored Pencil Magazine” article September 2019

Lisa has a deep rooted passion for animals & her work captures not only the likeness of her subjects, but also the expression & individual character of every single one.
After running a successful pet portrait & wildlife art business for many years, Lisa now teaches both in the UK & internationally & also has an online teaching channel & is constantly creating new tutorials for both beginners & those looking to push their art to the next level. She focuses mainly on colored pencils but also combines other mediums such as Pan Pastel to create a wider array of effects to her fur work. My grandfather was a painter, illustrator, and professor. I grew up sitting on his lap watching him draw. It fascinated me. I had an amazing (and patient, ha) art teacher in high school that nurtured my abilities and helped me create a portfolio that was awarded several scholarships to major art schools.
Artist Q&A: Lora Murphy
Lora Murphy was born in Ireland and educated in Ireland, USA and Italy. Trained as an oil painter, she now works primarily in Encaustic and mixed media. Lora teaches workshops in Contemporary Portraiture in Encaustic throughout the world and is currently working on an E-course, due to be released this year. She divides her time between Ireland and Denmark and maintain studios in both countries.
