Using PanPastel       Techniques        Substrates

As with all new mediums it may take a little time to get used to working with PanPastel Colors.
Experiment! You will find that you can create a myriad of new marks and textures.
Here are some basic techniques to get started:

BLOCKING IN

Block in large areas of color quickly & easily.
For underpainting, backgrounds & toning paper.
Sofft Big Oval or Angle Slice sponges are perfect for this.

LAYERING

Build up multiple layers of semi-transparent color.
Or apply thin controlled veils (glazes) of color.
Tip: to isolate layers when working, a workable spray
pastel fixative can be used.

MIXING

Mix colors, dry-in-dry, directly on the surface like paint.

BLENDING & HIGHLIGHTING

Blend easily with Sofft Tools.
Add highlights / accents.

GRADATIONS OF COLOR

It’s so easy to achieve gentle gradations of color –
by blending seamlessly from color to color.

MULTIPLE LOADING

Load Sofft Tools with two or three colors.
You can load the tools with multiple colors, multiple times.
Load palest color first.

MIXED MEDIA

Try combining PanPastel with pastel sticks, pencils, acrylics, watercolors and other artist’s media for a variety of techniques.
